Dear Arena readers,

Freemasonry teaches us a lot about progression and keeping the light shining. In this edition, we explore continuity in a variety of ways. First, through family links. We are sharing more stories of a Lewis being initiated by his father or grandfather. We also meet a true masonic family with nine related Lodges participating together in a Ceremony of Enlightenment. Finally, the Earl of Dartmouth Lodge shows that family links can also, at times, be unexpected.

We follow the thread by revisiting some friends, including Arlo, a gorgeous hearing assistant cockerpoo and the meat enthusiasts from the Brazilian Lodge.

To demonstrate continuity through generations, we celebrate a 97th birthday, 60-year and even 70-year long service certificates, and we meet a batch of new initiates as they are joined by a very special guest for their initiates’ dinner.

Our charity donations maintain the continuity theme with the creation of a new helicopter appeal for the London Air Ambulance, an ongoing lifeline from the previous appeal that saw the purchase of 2 units a few years ago. We also meet two charities that connect people. The first one combats loneliness and isolation, especially for the elderly population. The second one runs a buddy programme to help young people build new friendships.

And on a more personal note, I must tell you that this is the last time I am talking to you as editor. The last three years have been wonderful. Bringing Arena out of the pandemic, back into print, and back in your hands has been an absolute privilege. Life, however, has driven me away from London, and the time has come for me to pass the torch to a new editor, Nick Saalfeld. Continuity will be ensured as Nick takes on the lead. All that remains is for me to thank you all, our readers and those who contribute to articles. Keep on reading and sending your stories and photos. Keep Arena alive and the hot topic in masonic circles. I wish you well.
