A tale of optimism from the secretary of Kennington Lodge No 1381, W Bro Michael Duque LGR
The pandemic has drastically affected everyone. Individuals and Lodges have all been impacted by the devastating effects of Covid-19.
A couple of years ago, the Kennington Lodge No 1381 was on the cusp of returning its warrant when a few good brothers from different Lodges came to the rescue. The Lodge was starting to breathe again. Then the pandemic arrived with a vengeance.
Today, eighteen months later, and having had only one meeting since late 2019, the Kennington Lodge may again face its dissolution. We have lost a brother due to old age; a candidate fell ill and passed away; many members lost their jobs and resigned from Freemasonry while others had to move to a Lodge closer to home. To add to it, two of our senior members are ill and find it difficult to travel. The remaining members are primarily junior members, now facing additional pressure to take on offices, so that Lodge duties are carried out.
Throughout the pandemic, the brethren – mostly healthcare professionals – have kept in touch as best they could through available technologies. We have visited one another, even if only to talk through the front door. Some have encouraged others to participate in various challenges. We have supported each other while managing our time under both personal and professional pressures.
We have also kept our doors open to anyone interested in Freemasonry and treated them as if they were already our brothers. As a result, we have two candidates in the pipeline. We have recently met again at FMH, and we are actively preparing for next year’s 150th anniversary.
Despite sickness, loss and resignation, we have stood together and continued to fight for our Lodge. The Lodge has survived through unity and resilience. Today, the remaining members are gaining momentum and very much looking forward to the next 150 years. If we could do it, other Lodges can too.
